Have you ever picked up a leaf because your couldn't bear to leave it's beauty behind? Autumn is something we mostly imagine here in Southern California. Having grown up on the East Coast, I still miss the changing of the seasons-the crisp air, the brilliant colors, and the quiet ritual of watching summer give way to fall. These leaves were gathered by a friend who lives where the seasons still announce themselves in vibrant color. She photographed them, and from that image I created this colored pencil drawing-a collection of moments I could no longer experience firsthand, yet somehow still felt connected to. Part of my Reclaimed Series, Autumn Leaves, rendered entirely in colored pencil, celebrates objects that are often overlooked or left behind. Unlike weathered buildings or forgotten places, these leaves remind us that beauty is often fleeting. Their lives were brief, but their colors, textures, and quiet elegance deserve another season. Autumn Leaves was selected as a finalist for Awesome Autumn 2026, a juried online exhibition presented by KBM Art Gallery.
