About the Artist — Patrick O’Rourke (1956–2026) Patrick O’Rourke knew by the age of four that he was destined to become an artist. Over a career spanning nearly seven decades, he developed the distinctive style he called Romantic Realism—painting not simply what the eye could see, but what the heart could feel. Inspired by the sweeping vineyards, oak-studded hillsides, coastal landscapes and changing seasons of Northern California, O’Rourke became especially renowned for his portrayals of Napa and Sonoma Wine Country. Morning mist settling over the vines, the golden colors of harvest, quiet country roads and majestic old oaks became hallmarks of his work. His masterful use of light, color and detail transformed familiar landscapes into places of warmth, beauty and emotion. O’Rourke's career was marked by both extraordinary creativity and resilience. The devastating 2017 Tubbs fire destroyed many of his treasured original paintings, yet he continued to create some of the finest work of his career. After suffering a stroke in 2023, Patrick spent nearly two years in rehabilitation, determined to return to the easel. In February 2025, he made the difficult decision to retire when he realized he could no longer paint at the uncompromising level he expected of himself. Patrick passed away in 2026 after an aggressive return of cancer. His remarkable body of work now stands complete—a lasting tribute to the landscapes he loved and a lifetime devoted to art. For more than two decades, Gallery 1870 was privileged to represent Patrick and is honored to continue preserving and sharing his artistic legacy. “I have had a lifelong passion for the sweeping vineyards and oak studded hillsides of the wine country.” — Patrick O’Rourke
