Melon shaped beads seem to have originated in Egypt and the Near East and their shape originally derived from the lotus-bud, rather than the creases in a melon. These melon beads a re hand carved from selected gemstones and set with delicately granulated caps and bails. The rich, warm buttery tones of the gold gently highlight the melons' "grooves" and at the base of each melon bead, mimicking the blossom end, you will find a tiny, sparkling gem, cradled by granulation that compliments the gemstone it was carved from.
