Eau de Parfum Azalai is inspired by one of the last remaining salt trade routes in North Africa, specifically used by the Tuareg nomads of the Ténéré desert region of the Southern Sahara. Along this caravan route stood a single acacia tree, the loneliest tree in the world. The tree was considered unique, and it was generally understood that camels were not to nibble on the leaves or travellers to harvest wood for fires. Astonishingly, in 1973 a drunken truck driver crashed into it and killed it. An ignominious end. Azalai is a perfume of gold, sun and expanses of shifting sands illuminated by the honeyed leather of saffron and thirst-quenching blood orange. The erudition and delight of Azalai lies in the olfactory reference points of this trade route history reflected in the notes and accords of the perfume: tea, spices like cardamon, pepper nutmeg and clove, dried fruit, textiles and glittering gold. Saffron, blood orange and warm amber are the sun’s constant presence and mint references the sweet hot mint tea drunk at night around a fire. An interesting note is gum acacia, an exudation of the acacia tree that has a soft scent of roasted marshmallows, it is a subtle compliment to the more lingering incense note and leathered dried fruits. The key to the lingering atmospherics of Azalai is the use of Velvione, a synthetic musk that has an exalting powdered effect that diffuses around the other materials, smoothing, creating a soft-focus sillage resembling the slow fall of heated day into night.
