Born in Kai Province, now part of modern-day Yamanashi Prefecture, he was the eldest son of Takeda Nobutora, head of the Takeda clan. At a young age, Shingen challenged his father's authority and eventually took control of the Takeda clan. He then began expanding his influence beyond Kai, particularly into Shinano Province, now known as Nagano Prefecture. Through a series of military campaigns, Shingen established himself as a formidable strategist and expanded Takeda territory. He became especially famous for his long-running rivalry with Uesugi Kenshin, which resulted in the legendary Battles of Kawanakajima.
