About This In the rolling hills of Kenya’s Rift Valley, the Kapkiyai Farmers Cooperative Society has transformed from a once all-male collective into a vibrant, women-led force for change. We’re honored to bring this beautiful, meaningful coffee to our menu — a reflection of Kenyan terroir, community strength, and the future of equitable coffee production. Our relationship with Kapkiyai comes through our sourcing partner, Vava Coffee, founded by Vava Angwenyi. A farmer, exporter, and activist, Vava has spent over a decade working to reshape the Kenyan coffee landscape by championing education, empowerment, and gender equity. Thanks to her leadership, and the resilience of producers like those at Kapkiyai, initiatives like Fairtrade certification and targeted agronomy training have helped increase both coffee quality and incomes across the board. This means that farmers use methods that support three pillars of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental. Independent, third-party auditors evaluate farmers against requirements in all three areas before awarding or renewing certification. Because Rainforest Alliance certification extends beyond the farm, all actors in the supply stream, including roasters as the final stewards of the coffee, must adhere to a rigorous set of standards.
