8 Inches High x 13.5 Inches Wide x 1 Inch Deep This relief was created by an unknown artist after Baroque sculptor François Duquesnoy's (c. 1597-1643) relief Bacchanalia of Putti. Sculpted in 1626, Duquesnoy's piece is now housed in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome. Many sculptors and painters copied it. This copy doesn't extend as far to the left as the original. Depicted are several putti with a goat celebrating Bacchus. The Roman god Bacchus, or Dionysus in Greek, was the god of wine, agriculture, and ecstasy. Since the listing in the antique P.P. Caproni and Brother catalogs is smaller than this piece, P.P. Caproni and Brother must have molded a larger one or created an enlargement.
