Gérôme painted this stunning picture on his return to Paris, after a twelve-week expedition to the Middle East, at the beginning of 1868. He was then at the peak of his career. He dressed a model of textiles he had acquired in the Levant in his studio. Gerome gave a Turkish title to the canvas, which can be translated as "bad head," which evokes the ferocious mercenaries without faith or law whose only pay was the spoils of their looting. Show more
