Behind the stage at Teatro Ernesto Rossi, where the building becomes much more raw, with exposed timber, old machinery, worn floors and the traces of more than two centuries of theatrical history. Built in 1770 to designs by architect Zanobi del Rosso, the theatre was inaugurated as the Teatro Nuovo in 1771. Designed in the traditional Italian style, its horseshoe-shaped auditorium is surrounded by tiers of ornate private boxes, later remodelled and decorated during the 19th century. It became one of Pisa's most important theatres before closing in 1966. I photographed Teatro Ernesto Rossi as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, documenting significant public buildings and the traces of history that remain within them. Framed works will be safely packaged, crated and insured and will then be delivered via a courier or international shipper.
