Bad Neighbours (2014)Bad Neighbours (released as Neighbors in the US) is a sharp, consistently funny suburban comedy released in 2014 and directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek). Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne play Mac and Kelly Radner, new parents trying to hold onto their youth who find themselves at war with the Delta Psi Beta fraternity that moves in next door, led by charismatic president Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron). The film was a major box office hit, grossing over $270 million worldwide, and works because Stoller and writers Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O'Brien give equal comic weight to both sides of the conflict. Rose Byrne in particular is a revelation, matching Rogen beat for beat and delivering one of the great underrated comedy performances of the decade.Highlights Rose Byrne's performance — Consistently the funniest person in the film; Byrne's Kelly is smart, competitive and completely committed to the escalating war, and her comic timing is impeccable throughout. Zac Efron as Teddy — A career-redefining turn; Efron plays the charming, physically perfect but emotionally stunted frat president with real self-awareness and genuine comic skill, subverting his heartthrob image to brilliant effect. The airbag prank sequence — One of the film's standout set pieces; perfectly timed, escalating and utterly committed, it is the kind of gag that only works when everyone involved is fully on board. The Robert De Niro party — A brilliantly absurd sequence that showcases the film's willingness to go completely off the rails; the costume party set piece is one of the decade's great comedy moments. The Mac and Kelly dynamic — Rogen and Byrne's chemistry as a couple trying to be cool while clearly failing is the emotional engine of the film; their relationship gives the comedy real warmth and stops it from being purely anarchic.
