Bakuchiol acts as an anti-aging active. It being a retinol-like compound has been found to modulate following key genes like retinoid-binding & metabolizing genes, dermal-epidermal junction genes, extracellular matrix genes and cytoskeletal genes resulting in anti-aging benefits. It stimulates collagens type I, III (older fibroblasts) and IV proteins as revealed by cell culture studies. Bakuchiol maintains the desired level of elastin required for maintaining the connective tissue structure due to its up-regulation of elastase inhibitor (PI3). It has excellent photochemical and hydrolytic stability, a good safety profile and is easy to formulate due to its miscibility with a wide variety of emollients and solubilizers. Bakuchiol is a broad spectrum antimicrobial plus anti-inflammatory agent. Also acts as an anti-acne agent.
