Dorcas Haynes, band sampler, 1720 (reworked) The Fitzwilliam Museum has an impressive and diverse array of European samplers, pieces of embroidery which enabled the seamstress to b ecome adept at different stitches and to experiment with patterns, colours, and lettering. This splendid cotton tea towel incorporates floral patterns and motifs from a bright band sampler inscribed 'Dorcas Haynes' and dated 1720. The original work uses a wide range of coloured silks and displays mastery of stitching techniques including herringbone, rococo, and Florentine.
