USS Constitution vs HMS Guerriere - August 19, 1812 Off the coast of Nova Scotia, the Constitution met the British frigate Guerriere in her first great trial at sea. As they drew w ithin range, the sea erupted with the thunder of broadside cannons. British shot struck hard against the hull of the American frigate but failed to pierce it. A British sailor, awestruck by what he saw, shouted, “Her sides are made of iron!” Through smoke and cannon fire, the Guerriere’s masts splintered and her decks shattered. She fought bravely, but her rigging fell to ruin and her colors were struck. As flames consumed what remained, Old Ironsides sailed on, scarred yet unbroken, carrying a nation’s pride upon the sea.
