Barberry (Berberis thunbergii) is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub prized for vibrant foliage and dense hedging. Highly adaptable to various soils and drought-tolerant once establish ed, it thrives in full sun to partial shade across Southern Ontario. Plant in spring or fall, spacing 3 feet apart for a continuous hedge. Water newly planted shrubs weekly during their first season; mature plants need water only during extended droughts. Fertilizing is rarely necessary, though a balanced slow-release formula in early spring can boost growth. Prune in late winter or early spring before leaf-out, or after flowering in late spring. Shearing creates formal hedges; selective cutting maintains a natural shape. For rejuvenation, cut back hard (1/3 of total height) in early spring. Wear thick gloves—sharp thorns require protection. Extremely cold-hardy with no special winter care needed, though protection from strong drying winds may help in open areas. In SW Ontario, hardware cloth or wrapping can protect against winter rabbit damage if populations are high.
