Herb: Barberry Root Bark, Wild CraftedBerberis vulgaris Format: Cut RootSize: 1 oz Bag Also Known as: European barberry, common barberry, jaundice berry, pepperidge bush, and berberis Location: Bulgaria Native to parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia, Berberis vulgaris is a small shrub with tart, edible berries and thorny branches. The root of barberry contains berberine, a bright yellow plant constituent thought to contain wellness-supporting properties. Barberry root has a history of use in traditional healing systems from around the world and is often utilized in extracts, topical applications, and decoctions. The barberry is a tall shrub with gray, thorny branches. Bright yellow flowers bloom in the late spring and become dark, drooping bunches of red berries in the fall. Puckery but less bitter than cranberries, ripe barberries can be used to make jam. Both the berries and the bark are used traditionally. Barberry is a member of the Berberidaceae family. In Magick, Barberry is a powerful, protective herb known for "barring" negativity, breaking crossed conditions, and removing personal stagnation. Associated with Mars, Saturn, and the Earth element, its thorny branches and bitter, yellow root have been used for centuries to guard sacred spaces and empower personal sovereignty. Historically called the "Holy Thorn" in Italian folk tradition, sprigs were placed over doorways and windows to bar malevolent forces, ghosts, and ghouls from entering the home. In rootwork and hoodoo, the dried bark is a staple for uncrossing spells—rituals designed to remove curses, hexes, or persistent bad luck. The plant's name reflects its energetic ability to break bindings. It is used in empowerment and cord-cutting rituals to sever ties with toxic influences or controlling energies. The bright, golden-yellow color of its root and its dense thorns represent assertive energy. Practitioners carry it in mojo bags or burn it in incense to build courage and reclaim personal power.
