Barium carbonate may be derived from the mineral barite (BaSO4) or from barium chloride. When used in glazes, it can act as a flux, promoting a glossy finish and improving the flow and melt of a glaze at high temperatures. It is also used to achieve unique glaze effects, such as matte and crystalline surfaces, and to create vivid colour responses when combined with certain metal oxides. In clay bodies, it may be added in small amounts to neutralize soluble salts which can cause efflorescence or scumming on the surface of the clay.
