Looking through the historic Bardini Gardens towards the Duomo, amongst terraces, stonework, fountains and fragments of the formal garden. Villa Bardini was built in 1641 as Villa Manadora, designed by Gherardo Silvani for Francesco Manadori as a 17th-century country retreat overlooking Florence. Its gardens evolved over centuries, combining formal Italian and Baroque elements with later Anglo-Chinese and Victorian influences. The estate was acquired by antiquarian Stefano Bardini in 1913 and became State property in 1987. I photographed Villa Bardini as part of my ongoing work with Agenzia del Demanio, exploring the history, identity and transformation of Italy's public architectural heritage.
