This Bust is 15cm tall. A Basenji is a small, elegant dog breed originally from Central Africa, often referred to as the "barkless dog." Instead of barking, Basenjis produce a unique yodel-like sound, called a baroo, because of the unusual shape of their larynx. They are one of the oldest known dog breeds, with depictions resembling them found in ancient Egyptian art, and they were traditionally used as hunting dogs in the Congo region for tracking and driving game. Basenjis are compact and graceful, usually standing about 16 to 17 inches (40–43 cm) tall and weighing between 20 to 24 pounds (9–11 kg). They have a short, fine coat that comes in colors like chestnut red, black, brindle, or tricolor, always with white markings on the feet, chest, and tail tip. Their tightly curled tail and wrinkled forehead give them a distinctive appearance. Known for their intelligence and independence, Basenjis often behave more like cats than typical dogs. They are meticulous groomers, dislike water, and can be aloof or reserved with strangers while forming strong bonds with their families. However, they are also highly energetic, curious, and mischievous, requiring plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to prevent destructive behavior. Training a Basenji can be challenging due to their stubborn streak and strong hunting instincts, which make them prone to chasing small animals. They are not generally considered reliable off-leash dogs. Despite this, with patience and consistency, they can learn obedience and enjoy canine sports like lure coursing and agility. Because of their low-shedding coat and lack of doggy odor, Basenjis are relatively easy to keep clean, though they are not hypoallergenic. They also have a reputation for being escape artists, capable of climbing fences or squeezing through small spaces.
