The U.S. Information Agency, the State Department, and the Office of Education, worked together to develop this FSI (Foreign S ervice Institute) course in Cantonese, the principal language of 54 million people in southern China, Hong Kong, and Macau. The course is presented in two volumes, each requiring about 200 hours of study time. It uses the basic grammatical structures of the language and a vocabulary of approximately 950 words. These materials will teach you to speak standard Cantonese fluently and grammatically, with acceptable pronunciation, within the scope of topics of daily life. The texts incorporate a modification of the Huang-Kok Yale Romanization for all basic grammar structures and vocabulary.
