Curved objects give us a lovely opportunity to practise smooth, graduated changes in tone, and in this tutorial we’ll paint a bright red cylinder filled with light, shadow and spar kle. I’ll show you how to mix a lively range of reds using pink, red and blue, creating brighter colour for the light side and deeper, cooler reds as the cylinder turns into shadow. Because the surface is curved, we’ll concentrate on blending those tones smoothly rather than creating the sharper changes we see on square shapes. We’ll also use masking fluid to preserve tiny flashes of brilliant white paper before removing it at the end, and I’ll show you how to soften those highlights if they feel just a little too bright. It’s a simple but really useful study for learning how curved forms work – and how just the right balance of colour, light and shadow can make them feel wonderfully solid. Show more
