The summer heat, or anything above 75F, prevents germination and causes crops to wilt or bolt. There are some varieties that are better adapted for the summer. Every three weeks, plant a new crop to have successive harvests. Lettuce is an excellent vegetable to grow in containers. Start lettuce indoors 4 weeks before transplanting or plant directly into the garden as soon as the soil is able to be worked. Spread seeds over the top of the soil and then lightly cover them with 1/8”-1/4” soil. The seeds will germinate in 2-10 days.
