Sweet Basil helps clear the mind from emotional turmoil. It has been used in Ayurvedic homes for centuries to cleanse and purify the homes. Used in Ayurvedic blends it was believed to encourage stamina and courage. It is believed to promote antiviral properties and support adrenal health. Basil historically was also used to repels flies and small flying insects. Sweet basil is high in linalool proprieties, creating a very soothing scent that is also uplifting. I use it in blends for many cancer patients. Only Sweet basil is safe for use for them because it does not contain high levels of estragole, a property that can be harmful for cancer patients. In aromatherapy blends, Sweet basil is added as a middle, or heart note. The scent is herbaceous and minty. Some varieties have a peppery or spicy aroma. Different varieties have distinct scents: lemon basil, African basil has a clove scent; Tai, or holy basil has a hint of licorice smell. Basil essential oil is often used in colognes as a unisex aroma. It blends well with many herbal essential oils. Caution is advised with those on blood thinners and high blood pressure medicine.
