Basil Hayden's Subtle Smoke Bourbon 750ML is a hickory smoke barrel-finished Kentucky bourbon bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a 750ml bottle. What distinguishes this expression from nearly every other smoky American whiskey is its production approach — rather than smoking the grain, the aged bourbon itself spends six months in secondary barrels infused with hickory smoke, creating a gentler, more layered smoke character over Basil Hayden's signature high-rye backbone.Quick Facts: ABV: 40% (80 Proof) | Origin: Clermont, Kentucky, USA | Style: Hickory Smoke Barrel-Finished Bourbon | Distillery: Jim BeamProduction & HeritageBasil Hayden's is produced at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, Kentucky, part of the Beam Suntory portfolio. The bourbon starts with a high-rye mashbill — believed to be 63% corn, 27% rye, and 10% malted barley — which gives it a spicier, lighter profile than most standard bourbons. For the Subtle Smoke expression, the finished bourbon undergoes a secondary maturation of six months in barrels that have been toasted, slightly charred, and filled with smoke produced by igniting hickory wood chips. This barrel-level smoking of the already-aged whiskey, rather than the grain, is a distinctive technique that separates it from smoked whiskeys relying on kiln-dried malt or charcoal filtration.Tasting NotesAroma: Butterscotch and sweet vanilla arrive first, followed by a mellow hickory smoke that recalls a fading campfire. Deeper investigation reveals leather, dark chocolate, and a trace of charred wood.Taste: The entry is gentle and slightly sweet, with caramel and maple leading into a mid-palate of cinnamon spice and soft char. As the bourbon opens up, cherry and orange peel emerge alongside a savory, almost barbecue-like smokiness that never overwhelms the underlying sweetness.Finish: Short but warm, with lingering cinnamon and a final whisper of hickory smoke. The high-rye spice keeps things clean without bitterness. How to Drink Subtle SmokeNeat is the most revealing serve — the 80-proof bottling strength keeps the alcohol in check and lets the hickory character breathe without dilution. A single ice cube opens the caramel and vanilla notes further without muting the smoke. For cocktails, try a Smoked Old Fashioned, where the built-in hickory character replaces the need for a smoking gun or smoked syrup; a Boulevardier, where the bourbon's smoke and spice stand up to Campari's bitterness and sweet vermouth's richness; or a Whiskey Sour, where the gentle smoke adds an unexpected savory edge behind the citrus and sweetener.Best For Introducing a whiskey drinker to smoky bourbon without the intensity of peated Scotch Building a smoked Old Fashioned at home without additional smoking tools Gifting to a barbecue enthusiast who appreciates hickory-forward flavors Exploring Basil Hayden's range beyond the original expression Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Subtle Smoke taste like? It leads with butterscotch, caramel, and maple sweetness before a gentle wave of hickory smoke and cinnamon spice builds through the mid-palate. The finish is short and warm with lingering smoke and no harsh bitterness. How does Subtle Smoke compare to Wild Turkey Longbranch? Both are lower-proof bourbons with a smoky profile, but they achieve it differently: Longbranch is filtered through mesquite and oak charcoal for its smoky character, while Subtle Smoke barrel-finishes the bourbon in hickory smoke-infused casks. The result is that Subtle Smoke leans more campfire-sweet, while Longbranch tends drier and more mineral. Is Subtle Smoke good for beginners? Yes — the 80-proof strength and gentle smoke make it one of the most approachable smoky bourbons available, well-suited for drinkers new to the category who want flavor without intensity.Where is Subtle Smoke made? It is produced at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont, Bullitt County, Kentucky. The distillery, one of the largest bourbon operations in the world, has been producing whiskey in the region since 1795 under various names. What foods pair well with Subtle Smoke? Smoked brisket or pulled pork mirrors the hickory character directly. Sharp aged cheddar contrasts the caramel sweetness. Grilled stone fruit like peaches plays off the bourbon's cherry and maple notes. Dark chocolate with sea salt echoes the leather and cocoa on the nose. Candied pecans complement the butterscotch and spice. What sizes does Subtle Smoke come in? The standard offering is a 750ml bottle, which is the most widely distributed size for this expression. Is Subtle Smoke worth the price? Subtle Smoke positions in the mid-range premium bourbon tier. Its unique hickory smoke barrel-finishing process gives it a genuine point of differentiation, and the accessible proof makes it versatile for sipping and cocktails, offering solid value against other flavored-finish bourbons. Why Subtle Smoke? The defining feature here is the production method: filling already-aged bourbon into barrels infused with actual hickory smoke is unusual in the bourbon world, where smoky character more commonly comes from charcoal filtration or heavily charred new oak. That technique gives Subtle Smoke a campfire warmth that feels organic to the whiskey rather than applied on top of it. The high-rye mashbill underneath provides enough spice and structure to keep the smoke from reading as a one-note novelty. For drinkers who want a smoky bourbon they can sip neat at 80 proof or drop into cocktails without overpowering other ingredients, this expression fills a narrow but underserved lane in the American whiskey category.
