I can’t remember ever seeing one dart out of the corner of my eye without instinctively saying, “A bat!” They feel like brown-winged secrets, dependably popping out of their hidden places to remind us that a whole world is awakening just as we’re heading to bed. They have a way of linking us to the mystery of childhood, when the idea of a vibrant, nighttime world unfolding outside our windows felt as magical as the fairy tales we drifted off to. A single bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquito-sized insects in an hour, a vital part of our Louisiana food chain for sure. Beyond their role in keeping balance around us, they keep us in wide-eyed wonder as the only flying mammals left today.
