There are a handful of records that genuinely broke something open and changed what came after them. The 1984 Bathory debut is one of them. Recorded cheap, released on the now-lege ndary Black Mark label, and credited only to a skull logo and a one-word band name, it landed like a transmission from somewhere colder and darker than anywhere the metal world had been before.Quorthon was seventeen. The production sounds like it was tracked in a cave during a power outage. None of that matters, because the songs, particularly Hades, Reaper, and War, contain something genuinely feral that no amount of studio polish could have captured or improved.
