We carefully source quality seeds from trusted growers here and around the world, often importing small quantities that are not readily available locally.Seed Type: Fresh Chinese Bayberry seeds.Origin: China and Southeast Asia. Growth Habit: Attractive evergreen tree reaching 5–15 metres at maturity. Suitable for home gardens, orchards and lifestyle properties.Germination: Bayberry seeds benefit from a period of cold stratification to improve germination. First, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Then place them in a sealed bag with lightly moist vermiculite, peat moss, or a damp paper towel and refrigerate (not freeze) at 3–5°C for 60–90 days. After stratification, sow the seeds 10–15 mm deep in a free-draining seed-raising mix. Keep warm (20–25°C) and consistently moist. Germination can take 4–12 weeks, though some seeds may take longer.Climate: Bayberries grow well in many parts of New Zealand. In colder South Island areas they benefit from a sunny, sheltered position and protection while establishing. Fruit: Produces round, deep red fruit with a distinctive bumpy surface. The flesh is juicy, sweet and slightly tangy with flavours often compared to a combination of strawberry, cherry and pomegranate. Flowers: Small greenish-yellow flowers appear in spring and are pollinated by the wind. Fruiting: Typically begins producing fruit within 5–8 years from seed under good growing conditions. Care: Prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soil, regular watering while establishing and a warm, sheltered position. Mulching helps retain moisture and encourage healthy growth. Health Benefits The fruit is naturally rich in: Vitamin C to support the immune system. Dietary Fibre for healthy digestion. Antioxidants including anthocyanins that help protect cells from oxidative stress. Potassium which supports heart and muscle function. Naturally refreshing, juicy flesh that's delicious eaten fresh, juiced or made into jams and desserts.
