Both Celtic and Viking women wore dresses fastened at the shoulders with a pair of brooches, and these brooches were often uses to hang stands of beads made of stone or precious me tals. Sometimes these strands had spacers worked into them, both because it looked good, but also because these spacers helped to keep the strands from getting tangled.
