Nolina microcarpa Also known as Sacahuista, Sacahuista Bear Grass Bear Grass boasts many sturdy, grass-like leaves that grow from its large, woody, basal stems. These beautifully coarse-bladed leaves, typically under four feet long, display a lovely yucca-like growth pattern. You'll find delightful white flowers clustered densely at the tops of flowering stems that reach 3-5 feet high. Interestingly, the plant doesn’t have a prominent stem. Even though it’s called Bear Grass, it’s not a grass at all! It’s a succulent from the lily family. Indigenous Peoples have traditionally used it to weave baskets. The name Sacahuista comes from two Aztec words that mean "thorn grass": zakat (grass) and huitztli (thorn).
