THE DRAGON DOWN UNDER ❃ The bearded dragon is one of Australia’s most recognizable reptiles, named for the spiny “beard” beneath its throat. When threatened, excited, or communicat ing with another dragon, it can expand this throat pouch and darken its color, creating a much more intimidating appearance. Despite the fearsome name, bearded dragons are generally calm, curious lizards that spend their days basking beneath the Australian sun. ❃ Bearded dragons are omnivores, feeding on a varied diet of insects, flowers, leafy vegetation, and occasional fruit. As ectotherms, they depend on external heat to regulate their body temperature, moving between sunny basking spots and cooler shade throughout the day. Their flattened bodies help absorb heat, while rows of pointed scales along their sides provide extra protection against potential predators. ❃ These expressive reptiles communicate using an entertaining collection of movements. Bearded dragons may rapidly bob their heads to display dominance, slowly wave one front leg as a submissive signal, or flatten their bodies when threatened. From their spiky armor to their surprisingly sophisticated body language, bearded dragons prove that you don't need wings or fire to earn the title of dragon. Show more
