Your brush can make far more marks than you might imagine, and in this tutorial I’ll show you how much variety you can create simply by changing the pressure, angle, movement and amount of paint on your brush. We’ll play with fine lines, broad sweeps, leaf-like shapes, cross-hatching and expressive marks, before moving on to some wonderfully useful techniques such as dry brushing, scumbling, dabbing and damp sweeping. I’ll show you how each creates a different effect, from broken textured marks to beautifully soft edges and gentle layers of colour. I’ll also explain how different brush sizes affect the marks you make and how choosing the right size can help you stay in control as you paint. This is a lovely chance to loosen up, experiment and really get to know your brushes. The more comfortable you become with the marks they can make, the more confidently you’ll be able to use them in your paintings.
