Info What Does It Do? Turns your bench grinder into a machine more suitable for buffing Extends the shaft of your bench grinder by about 3.5" and allows more room for maneuvering parts while buffing Includes cleaning wheels and mounting hardware so you can begin buffing immediately! How Does It Work? This kit simply slides onto the existing shaft of your machine and is held in place by set screws. After mounting the cleaning wheels using the provided hardware, you're ready to start restoring parts! The fine wheel cleans, brightens, and leaves behind a brushed type finish. For smoothing out scratches, scrapes, or casting lines, the coarse wheel is the ticket! Also works great for removal of rust, corrosion, and paint. There is an option for a right or left side kit. The right side uses a right hand thread and must be mounted on the right side of your machine, while the left side uses a left hand thread and must be used on the left. The extension is designed to be used for light buffing and sanding, it is not recommended to be used for heavy grinding applications. Includes 1 Extension Shaft (with nut and mounting hardware) 1 Fine Cleaning Wheel (choose between 6" and 8") 1 Coarse Cleaning Wheel (choose between 6" and 8") 2 Wheel Flanges (for securing wheels to shaft) 1 Wheel Spacer Click on "Video" tab to see the kit in use.Bench grinder not includedAlways wear a dust mask or respirator and proper eye protection while buffing! Installing a flange on either side of your wheel clamps the wheel securely to the shaft. 2" - 2 1/4" overall diameter (depending on buffer shaft size) 1/3" wide Made from CNC machined aluminum for a trick look and great durability Spacer Specs: Open up more space for your buffing activities with the wheel spacers. These spacers push the wheel towards the end of the buffing machine's shaft, creating more space between the wheel and the machine. 1/2" width CNC machined from aluminum for a perfect fit Video Tags: Bench Grinder Extension, Extender, Buffer, Pad, Wheel, Sanding, Buff, Buffing, 1/2" Extender, 1/2" Extension, 5/8" Extender, 5/8" Extension, 3/4" Extender, 3/4" Extension, Cleaning, Pad, Wheel, Scuff, Scotch, Abrasive, Buff, Buffing, Scotch Brite Wheel, Scotch Brite Pad, Abrasive Wheel, Abrasive Pad, Buffing Wheel, Buffing Pad How To How To Installing Extension If your machine has guards, remove them as well as any wheels mounted on the machine. Only mount right side extension onto the right side of your machine, and left side on the left. If you mount it on the wrong side, the nut will not stay tight. Make sure the shaft on your machine is clean and free of any burrs. Slide extension onto shaft, tap end with a rubber mallet to ensure it is fully seated. If extension is slightly loose on shaft and wiggles from side to side, wrap teflon tape around the threads on machine until extension fits snug. Do not use extension if fitment is sloppy. If extension won't slide onto machine, measure the shaft size with a set of calipers to ensure you purchased the correct size extension. You may be able to sand down the shaft of the machine if the difference is minimal. Once extension is on the machine's shaft fully, apply blue thread locker to the set screws and tighten screws as evenly as possible with the included allen wrench. Spin the shaft by hand to ensure the extension is on straight and there is no wobble. If it appears balanced, mount a wheel onto the extension and turn on machine to test for vibration. In the event of vibration, turn off the machine immediately and remove the extension. Ensure it fits snug on shaft and the set screws are tightened evenly. Check the extension to make sure it is tight on the machine before each use. Wheel Installation Secure wheel to buffer shaft with a flange on either side. Tighten down the nut until the wheel is secure on the shaft and doesn’t spin (use the included spacer if your nut bottoms out on the threads). Buffing Remove as much grease, oil, and dirt as you can before using the wheels, so you’re not contaminating them. Sand or buff in the same direction if you’re going for a brushed look. Intersecting scratches do not look good. Try to buff evenly across the part so you don't end up with dips or low spots. Use light pressure with the wheel or you'll wear it out prematurely. If you need to apply heavy pressure, you should go to a more aggressive wheel. Refer to buffing chart below. In order to make the wheels last as long as possible, stay away from sharp edges. The direction of the wheel should be spinning away from an edge and not towards it. Adjust the orientation of the part accordingly. The sweet spot to buff on the wheel is between 4 and 5 o’clock. Look at your buffing machine from the left side, and picture where 4 and 5 o’clock are on the wheels. That is where you will want the part to touch the wheel when buffing. Refer to the buffing chart below for the proper wheels to use with each metal type, as well as the steps to achieve the desired finish. If you have problems achieving a good finish, refer to the troubleshooting guide below. Always wear a dust mask or respirator and eye protection while buffing! After Buffing: A clear ceramic coating will protect your part after buffing. Steel and magnesium parts must be protected with a coating, bare steel will rust quickly and magnesium corrodes in a matter of hours. Stainless steel and aluminum can be left bare without corrosion issues, as long as you keep the parts clean and out of the weather during storage. To achieve a consistent brushed look on larger parts, finish it by hand with a hand pad, going in the same direction you were buffing in.
