The Bennington Flag is recognizable by the number “76” on the blue union, surrounded by white stars. Believed to be the first Stars and Stripes used by American land troops, it was flown over the military stores in Bennington on August 16, 1777 when General John Stark’s militia led the Americans to victory over the British raiding force.
