Appenzell country in autumn has a particular warmth that has nothing to do with temperature. Barns sit low in green valleys while the Bernese Alps rise behind them, and on clear evenings the last light turns the peaks into something close to amber. I had been walking the lanes near a farm when this scene opened below me.The barn anchored the foreground. The mountains carried the glow. I waited for the sky to settle into a gradient that would not compete with the ridge line. Swiss landscapes can feel tidy from a distance. Up close they ask for patience: the light changes quickly when clouds move through the passes, and a composition that works at six o'clock may fail by six fifteen. I stayed until the warmth held long enough to make the exposure. Every time I return to this image I remember how quiet the valley was when the alpenglow finally arrived.
