Much like Lowry himself, it is an observer over the bustling scene in the foreground, treading a fine line between presence and distance. The seemingly isolated Georgian steeple stands in stark contrast to the bustle of the street scene below, populated by running children, people going about their daily business and loitering tourists, taking in the scenery. The plethora of different characters betrays Lowry’s interest in the people that inhabit his favourite locales, and his fascination in life beyond the main high streets. As Lowry once remarked, ‘My recreation seems to have developed into drifting amongst all the backstreets... I can come across’.
