הַשָּׁמַיִם שָׁמַיִם לַה וְהָאָרֶץ נָתַן לִבְנֵי־אָדָם׃The heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth He gave over to man.- Psalms 115:16 In working the land, we can intimately know the partnership between humanity and Hashem. We feel our dependence on the divine in natural forces—soil, rain, sunlight, growth—and at the same time, we feel our own capabilities in directing those natural phenomena. In this power, we find the weight of our responsibility both to be righteous stewards of the earth and to make fruitful and worthwhile use of its potential in our hands. When Hashem “gave over” the earth to humanity, we are not passive recipients of a gift, but rather responsible, active parties in transforming and elevating the state of the earth.
