Stanley Turrentine's tenor sax at Blue Note Records in the '60s created the foundation for soul-jazz. With Creed Taylor's CTI Records in the '70s, Turrentine became more of a cross over artist, producing a laid-back, jazz-influenced sound with a subtle, raw edge. His move to Fantasy saw a transition to a light funk fusion, even forays into disco, before joining Elektra in '79. Synthesizers and massed guitars provide a grand sound, yet it's ultimately muted by the sweeping arrangements, leaving the album empty but still striking. Show more
