Betta coccina, commonly known as the Scarlet Betta, is a small labyrinth fish native to the peat swamp forests of Sumatra, Indonesia. It inhabits slow-moving blackwater streams, forest pools, and swampy wetlands where the water is heavily stained with tannins from decaying leaves and wood. These habitats are typically warm, extremely soft, highly acidic, and densely shaded by rainforest canopy, creating one of the most specialized freshwater environments in the aquarium hobby. Adult Scarlet Bettas typically reach about 2 to 2.5 inches in length. Despite their modest size, they are among the most beautiful of all wild Betta species. Mature males display an intense crimson to scarlet body with iridescent blue-green highlights on the scales and fins. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins often develop brilliant turquoise edging that contrasts dramatically with the deep red body. Females are more subdued, showing tan to reddish-brown coloration with shorter fins, though they also develop attractive red tones when mature. During courtship, males become exceptionally vibrant, displaying some of the richest coloration found within the Betta genus. A tank of at least 10 gallons is recommended for a single pair, with larger aquariums suitable for carefully managed groups in heavily structured setups. The aquarium should be densely planted with driftwood, leaf litter, botanicals, and floating plants to replicate the dark, sheltered conditions of their natural habitat. Water movement should be minimal, and subdued lighting is strongly recommended. A tightly fitting lid is essential, as these fish require warm, humid air above the water surface for proper labyrinth organ function. Water conditions are critical for long-term success. Temperatures between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with a pH range of approximately 4.5 to 6.5 and very soft water preferred. Captive-bred specimens may tolerate slightly less acidic conditions, but stable, clean water with minimal hardness is essential. Leaf litter and natural botanicals help recreate their preferred environment and promote natural behavior. Feeding Betta coccina requires a protein-rich diet. In nature they consume insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and other small aquatic invertebrates. In the aquarium they readily accept frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and blackworms. Many captive-bred individuals will also accept high-quality micro-pellets, though a varied diet is recommended to maintain peak coloration and breeding condition. Temperament is relatively peaceful compared to Betta splendens but remains territorial, particularly among males. They are best maintained as a compatible pair or in carefully planned species-only aquariums with abundant cover. If housed in a community aquarium, tankmates should be extremely peaceful, non-competitive species that tolerate the same soft, acidic water conditions. Breeding is achievable in captivity. Betta coccina is a bubble nest builder, with the male constructing a nest beneath floating leaves or other surface cover before spawning. After fertilization, the male guards the eggs and cares for the fry until they become free-swimming. Warm, stable blackwater conditions greatly improve breeding success. Betta coccina is one of the most spectacular wild Betta species available, prized for its brilliant scarlet coloration, peaceful demeanor, and fascinating natural behavior. When provided with soft, acidic blackwater conditions and a carefully aquascaped environment, the Scarlet Betta becomes a breathtaking centerpiece for dedicated Southeast Asian biotope and blackwater aquariums.
