Birds, animals, and people have traveled great distances in search of the conditions necessary to survive, endure, and continue. Sometimes survival means leaving what is familiar. Sometimes it means crossing boundaries. Sometimes it means refusing to remain inside the place others expect you to stay. That idea became the heart of Beyond All Borders. While creating the sculpture, Enrique Del Angel found himself thinking about migration and the extraordinary journeys living things undertake for their kind to survive. The hummingbird became a natural expression of that idea, a tiny creature capable of traveling immense distances despite its size. But Del Angel did not want this hummingbird simply depicted inside a frame. It would not be contained by one. The hummingbird extends into the viewer's space, breaking through the traditional boundary of the frame. With a gentle touch, the sculpture moves, giving the bird another sense of life and reinforcing the idea that it cannot simply be held motionless within prescribed borders. For Del Angel, the frame became more than a way to display the sculpture. It became part of its meaning. There are moments when remaining inside the boundaries around us is no longer enough. Whether driven by survival, hope, or the instinct to continue, sometimes we must move forward and break beyond the borders that contain us. The hummingbird in Beyond All Borders will not be contained. The Sculpture The kinetic hummingbird is suspended within an ornate wooden frame, hovering above a metal flower. Copper, brass, steel, and reclaimed components contrast with the traditional character of the frame, while the three-dimensional construction allows the bird to move beyond its physical boundaries. With a gentle touch, the balanced hummingbird moves, bringing motion into an artwork whose meaning is itself about movement.
