After earning an Associate of Arts degree from American River College in 1985, followed by further study in figure drawing and painting at California State University, Bales completed a B.F.A. at California College of the Arts in 1988, where he pursued an individualized program spanning drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. He has been exhibiting his work throughout California since 1986, transitioning from two-dimensional practices to assemblage sculpture in 1989.
