Eileen Gray conceived it with characteristic wit: the stacked, cylindrical leather cushions echo the silhouette of the Michelin Man, but the reference dissolves into something far more considered. The chair holds its own as a composition of volume, proportion, and material contrast. Gray moved between disciplines with rare fluency, working across architecture, lacquerwork, and furniture at a time when few designers, and fewer women, occupied that breadth of practice.
