Big Bear introduced shopping carts in 1937, used cashier-operated motorized conveyor belts, and became the first supermarket in the nation to use an IBM 305 RAMAC mainframe computer in the 1950s. It purchased Harts Stores in 1954 and later developed the Big Bear Plus hyperstore format, beginning with stores in Wintersville and Bridgeport in 1988. After periods as a private and public company, Big Bear was acquired by Penn Traffic in April 1989 and became a Penn Traffic division in 1993.
