Story behind the Lens Reaching the iconic Big Sable Point Lighthouse in Ludington, Michigan, during the winter months is a true test of dedication. On December 23, 2025, my wife, daughter, and I set out on a 4.9-mile loop—navigating woodland trails that had turned into sheets of slick ice before returning through the quiet, rolling coastal dunes. Rising 112 feet above the shores of Lake Michigan, this historical 1867 lighthouse stands as a majestic testament to maritime history, carved against a crisp winter sky. Composition Captured from an elevated vantage point nestled among the dunes, this horizontal landscape showcases the striking contrast of Michigan’s winter shoreline. The black-and-white striped tower and red-roofed keeper's quarters serve as a bold architectural focal point, flanked by bare winter trees and the deep blue expanse of Lake Michigan. In the foreground, golden, wind-swept sand dunes curve through warm light and soft shadows, bridging the gap between land, history, and sea. Fine Art Quality To ensure the crisp architectural lines of the lighthouse and the warm, golden textures of the dunes translate perfectly from the lens to your walls, I personally print each piece using the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100. I’ve selected three professional paper stocks to showcase the unique light and contrast of this winter landscape: Artisan Textured (Palo Duro Etching 315): My top recommendation for this piece. The heavy, cold-press texture mimics the organic, weathered feel of the sand dunes and historic brick, giving the lighthouse and surrounding landscape a rich, tangible fine art quality. Gallery Smooth (Aurora Art White 300): A 100% cotton rag with a sophisticated semi-smooth finish. Designed for surgical precision, it captures every fine detail—from the distinct black-and-white bands on the tower to the delicate branches of the winter trees—with clinical clarity. Standard Satin (UltraPro Satin 270): AA professional gallery staple. Its soft, pebbled texture produces deep blacks and vibrant contrast, perfect for accentuating the deep blue horizon and rich shadows across the dunes without reflection. Starting at $45.00. I hand-title each piece in the lower-left margin beneath the image and sign/date it in graphite on the lower-right—a classic gallery finish that marks it as an authentic TPegg Photography original. Trekking nearly five miles through icy woods with my family made reaching the dunes feel like a true victory. Standing out there in the crisp December air, watching the late afternoon sun warm the golden sand around that historic black-and-white tower, was incredible. It’s a piece that celebrates both Michigan's rugged coastal beauty and the timeless architecture that keeps watch over the Great Lakes."
