Beginning in 1893 in France, bicycles were required to have a registration plate, typically made of copper, brass, or tinplate, which could be easily bent and affixed to the bicycle's frame. To obtain this plate, bearing the year's designation, individuals needed to annually pay a tax at a tax office, which resembled the precursor to our modern-day tax centers. This system bore some resemblance to the later implementation of automobile license plates. Now, these treasures are beautifully repurposed as a holiday ornament.
