Billy Elliot the Musical Live captures a specially staged performance of the West End musical, filmed live from London's Victoria Palace Theatre on September 28, 2014 and released by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment in the US on October 13, 2015. Directed for the stage by Stephen Daldry, with the live broadcast directed by Brett Sullivan, the production features music by Elton John and book and lyrics by Lee Hall, based on the 2000 film Billy Elliot, which Hall also wrote. The filmed performance stars Elliott Hanna, who at age 11 became the youngest actor to play the title role, alongside Ruthie Henshall and Deka Walmsley. It also features a specially choreographed finale bringing together 25 current and former actors who have played Billy over the show's run, including original cast member Liam Mower. Set against the backdrop of the 1984-85 UK miners' strike, the musical follows a young boy who discovers a passion for ballet. Running time is 169 minutes.
