BioGuard Algae Complete is a dual-action algaecide that pairs two entirely different algae-fighting chemistries in one bottle — and that combination is the reason it works across algae types that single-mechanism products struggle with. Most algaecides pick a side. Quaternary ammonium products are effective and inexpensive but foam badly and lose ground against established growth. Copper products penetrate stubborn algae well but offer no surfactant action to help the treatment reach it. Algae Complete carries both: a polymeric quat that disrupts algae cell walls and helps the treatment spread and penetrate, and copper sulfate that attacks algae metabolism directly at a substantial 3.3% metallic copper concentration. That matters because algae is not one organism. Green algae is the free-floating variety that turns water cloudy and green, and it responds to almost anything applied promptly. Mustard algae — the yellowish, dusty growth that collects on shaded walls and brushes away only to return the next morning — is chlorine-resistant and hides in filters, on equipment, and in pool toys. Black algae is the hardest of all: it embeds roots into plaster and grout and grows a protective outer layer that shrugs off sanitizer entirely. A product that only works one way will clear the first and lose to the other two. Algae Complete is also non-foaming, which is a bigger practical advantage than it sounds. Quat-based algaecides are notorious for producing a head of foam that lingers for days, which makes them a poor choice for any pool with an attached spa, a spillover feature, or jetted returns.
