Why is petroleum used in other lip balms? Most mainstream products like lip balm, lip treatment, lip serum, even lip "sleeping mask" rely on petroleum-derived ingredients—like petrolatum, mineral oil, and paraffin wax—for lubrication, to thicken and solidify balm sticks, and as occlusives to seal in moisture. While effective at sealing in moisture, petroleum-derived occlusives are non-renewable, polluting, may degrade slowly in the environment, and don’t provide true hydration—often prompting repeat applications.
