Biophilia is Björk’s eighth studio album, released in October 2011 as a concept project exploring the connections between nature, music, and technology. Conceived during and in the wake of the 2008–2011 Icelandic financial crisis, the album takes its title from the idea of a “love of living things” and organizes its songs around natural phenomena—gravity, tectonic plates, lunar cycles, electricity—with track titles like “Moon,” “Thunderbolt,” “Crystalline,” “Cosmogony,” and “Mutual Core.” Musically, it blends art pop and experimental electronic music with custom-built instruments and unusual sound sources, including a Tesla coil used as a rhythmic and harmonic device, resulting in a sound world that is sparse, textural, and often intimate rather than overtly pop-oriented.Beyond the audio, Biophilia is framed as the “world’s first app album,” released in tandem with an interactive iPad app suite in which each song has its own app featuring games, animations, graphic scores, and essays that link musical structures to scientific and natural concepts. This multimedia ecosystem also encompassed a series of live residencies, custom instruments (like gravity harps and pendulum-controlled bass), educational workshops, and a museum-recognized app that entered the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
