“I want to make poems that look into the earth and the heavens and see the unseeable. I want them to honor both the heart of faith, and the light of the world; the gladness that says, without any words, everything” - Mary Oliver I too, want to make paintings that see the unseeable. There's an energy/a force/a spirit, invisible to the eye but not to the soul, in nature. It is this spirit that I want to capture in my paintings. And it is this feeling of spirit that I found at a river near my home. In the Spring of 2023 I let this river guide me on a path of new discoveries. Floating abstract forms of leaves, pebbles, flowers, branches, birds, moons and suns intertwined with suggestive shapes of mountains, rivers, winds and weather patterns. Shape-shifting shapes. This painting is an ode to a Spring spent inspired by a river that brought so much flow back into my practice, that sparked lots of new creative riffs within my work, and that reminded me of the connections between plants, animals, humans, the earth, the heavens and our collective spirit.
