Black and Blue was inspired by Robert Motherwell's work. Interestingly, this specific shade of blue used was adopted by Motherwell after he met Picasso, who used cigarettes package d in that same shade of blue as a prop during conversation. This anecdote resonated with Motherwell and influenced his use of this particular shade from that moment in time forward.
