Black Prince is a Russian heirloom salad tomato that produces 4–5 ounce fruits with glossy, chocolaty brown skins and a rich, complex flavor. Originally grown in both western Russia and Siberia, it’s well adapted to cooler climates but has also proven to perform well in the South, where the fruits often develop a deeper, almost black coloration. The slightly heart-shaped tomatoes taper gently at the blossom end, giving them a distinctive, elegant look. Inside, the flesh is deep red and juicy with a well-balanced, full-bodied flavor—rich without being overly sharp. Gardeners who are sensitive to acidic tomatoes may also appreciate that Black Prince has been shown to be significantly lower in acidity than many other varieties. In one study of nearly 400 tomatoes, it ranked among the least acidic, with roughly 40% less total acid than average. Unlike many dark-colored tomatoes that can struggle to fully ripen at the shoulders, Black Prince colors up evenly, developing subtle red undertones at peak ripeness. Earlier strains we trialed were prone to concentric cracking, but after several years of searching, we believe we've stumbled upon a superior strain that produces more uniform, blemish-free fruit.
